Talk by Jim Whitehead

Jim Whitehead, from UC Santa Cruz, who is in sabbatical with us, will participate in the LibreSoft seminar with the talk "Current Research Interests". It will be next Tuesday, 29th September, from 13:00 to 14:00 in Salón de Grados of the Departamental II Building, Mostoles campus of the URJC.

Title: Current Research Interests

Abstract:

Over the 2009/10 academic year, I have the good fortune to spend a sabbatical year with the GSYC Dept. at URJC. What research will I work on during this year? This talk presents three ongoing threads of research I and my students are pursuing. These are (1) work on predicting the location of latent software bugs using classifiers trained on data from the development history, and hopefully, also predicting some aspects of the bug and the bug fix; (2) understanding the bulk characteristics of the use of programming languages by
examining statement use frequencies across multiple programming languages, and (3) procedural generation of levels of computer games.

Bio:

Jim Whitehead is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research interests include software bug prediction, software evolution, code generation techniques, level design of computer games, and procedural generation of game content. He is the Program Co-Chair of the 2010 Working Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR 2010), and is part of the steering committee for the Foundations of Digital Games conference series. From 1995-1999 Jim led the development of the WebDAV protocol for web-based content authoring. He received his PhD in Information and Computer Science from Univ. of California, Irvine in 2000 under his advisor, Richard N. Taylor.
